Dog Blog Post #338: I probably missed a great opportunity today with the Daily Shoot assignment:
Make a photograph of a tool today.
What I should have done, is break out the clicker and set up some fancy training-like photo.
But I didn't.
No, today was housecleaning day (joy) and I just couldn't afford the time. Sooo... I looked around to see what has handy, and noticed (anyone? anyone?)
Yes... a broom!
(How did you guess?)
I tweeted the one up top, although the one below...
... gives a better idea of what the boys can do to two rooms in one week. (Keep in mind that these guys go to the groomer twice a month, and probably lose much of their coats there!)
Later on in the afternoon, I did find time to set up "the set" after all, for the first time since the first time with Baby, and found that being able to control focus made the whole process much more enjoyable. I'm still not all the way there, however, as all shots had one dog more focused than the other. I'm guessing it's either an aperture thing (to big) or a focal length thing (I'm zooming in too close.)
Thankfully, I was able to find a shot that was close to having both in focus, but you're going to have to wait until Wordless Wednesday to see it. :)
I also was playing with "Portrait Mode" again (outside, where I can control focus a lot better) noting how it gives the dogs a rather "soft" appearance. This bothered me greatly when I used it on day one (not realizing what it was doing and thinking I was having focus issues) but I now rather like it...
Alas, I still don't have their eyes showing large and brown like the greyhound folks can do. Perhaps it's just the breed? Some special trick? Too much light? My dogs just like to squint???
I find I can get close only when the lighting is just right, and the dogs heads are angled just right. Like this one...
(Is he irresistible, or what?)

About the eyes, I just had a look at some photos I took of Beryl at the river on Sunday and yes, her eyes are quite a bit more obvious than Henry and Zachary's but they are also a bit lighter brown than theirs. And there isn't as much head or hair there to soften the eye area:)
The little black spot on Zachary's tongue does make me smile:) Really gorgeous photos of them both.
I used to have Shelties, I remember all about dog hair! It's also quite amazing how much hair 2 shorthaired dogs can leave around the place, although it's not obvious until you sweep or vacuum it up.
Now that's a lot of hair & dust!
I'm still giggling over that picture of Henry and that expression on his face!
I love those portraits, too! It took me a long time to be able to get good shots of Bunny's eyes, and I still don't always get them. She has rather light colored eyes, it has to do with her recessive coloring. For me, the trick to getting her eyes to really stand out is to have her looking into a soft natural light. Some days it works better than others!
I should have said looking towards, not into! Gah!
And why is that assignment posted on a Monday? I could have gotten great vistas on Saturday! Bah!
The cleaning photographs have me laughing. With two shelties I am constantly finding hair even after I brush and vacuum. It is as if they wait until I clean and brush to find a new supply to blow out.
Sage's eyes are very dark brown too, so they don't show up well either. I'll have to try the portrait setting on my camera--love what it did with Henry & Zachery!!
That pile of hair reminds me of the tumbleweeds all over my house!
I love that puppy face, he is so sweet.
As for the pile of hair. I'll see your pile and raise you two.
Eh, what's a little extra fluff among friends.
