... was a bit harder to pull off than I thought it would be. I figured I would line the balls up (including the ball de jour) then quickly snap a before/after shot during and after Zachary snagging the Lacrosse Ball off the table.
Wrong.
Zachary just stood there looking confused and sad. I told him "OK!", I pointed, I even stuck a cookie behind the darned ball.
Nothing.
Finally, Henry pushed him aside and grabbed it.
Did I get the shot?
No, of course not. I had no clue the Precious Puppy was going to be so precocious.
Sooo... I retrieved the ball, reset the setup, and THIS time I was ready.
"OK!"
(point)
(place cookie on table)
Nothing.
Really? Really????????
Pick up ball and put back down.
"OK!"
... and this time I just waited, with finger on the trigger (so to speak.)
Henry snuffles.
Henry looks left.
Henry looks right.
Then he gave a little hop and the ball was gone.
Did I get the shot?
Yup!
Editor's Note: As it was asked - no, it doesn't have to be a Lacrosse Ball. Zachary actually prefers tennis balls, but his obsessive chewing makes them bad for his teeth and fatal to the balls in short order, and so Lacrosse Balls it is.
Henry's preference is for soft things, and will retrieve (to hand!) stuffies. Anything else he expects to renumeration for.
And Beau? Mr. "You threw it, you go get it."? He would chase a tennis ball (usually placing himself so he had a head start), but then plop down with it and chew. After a few moments, Zachary would take it from him and bring it back to me so the cycle could continue.
In Beau's defense, he was a fine retriever BEFORE Zachary showed up and started finishing the task for him.

I absolutely loved this one! With that floppy ear and expression, Henry just totally made that shot!
I suppose I should have known that any ball would work for a dedicated Retriever like Zachary!
Woof! Woof! The BLUR on the background added to the beauty of the photos. Happy Friday! Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar
I'm ashamed that it took me so long to get over to your blog. I'm all subscribed on Google Reader now, and I'm looking forward to getting to know you and your beautiful boys.
At first I thought they were oranges and he was going eat it, rind and all! Lacrosse balls is a great idea for a chewer and these are beautiful shots.
Great shots. I am alway left wanting to know what the dogs are thinking in the moment.
OMG, those two photos are perfect together.
What a great story.
