I can think of nothing more typical of Golden Retriever Culture than a good game of Bitey-Face.

What do you do when your flash batteries are failing during a game of Bitey-Face, so the picture comes out poorly exposed, and (of course) it's your favorite of the bunch (like the second pictures, above)?

Zachary: "Snap Biscuits and Peanut Butter Cookies and..."
Henry: "Cherry Chicken Cookies and Turkey Biscuits..."

Is that you two I hear rummaging around in the kitchen?

Zachary: "No Mom!"
Henry: "... and Turkey Jerky and..."

You aren't in the kitchen?

Zachary: "Uh, well, of course we're in the kitchen... but not rummaging..."
Henry: "... Chicken Meaties and..."

Zachary: "Will you stop that and help clean up this mess? Here she comes!"
Henry: "Quick - hide!"

Zachary: "What ARE you doing???"
Henry: "No one here at all. Just a crumpled bag. Nothing to see."

Zachary, why are the Cookie boxes all over the floor?

And why does Henry have a bag over his head?

Zachary: "I'm... teaching him how to... fold. Yes, fold the bags. Must empty them out to fold them."
Henry: "No dogs here. None at all."

Uh... Right.

Is anyone out there buying this???

Spin Zone

Reporter: "Excuse me sir, could you tell our readers what happened?"
Henry: "Well, you see a few weeks ago I turned on the fan and nothing happened."
Reporter: "How dreadful."

Henry: "So we all joined paws and bowed our heads and and closed our eyes and wished really hard."
Reporter: "And then what happened."

Henry: "Why you came along and wrote that wonderful article about our plight."
Reporter: "Aw-shucks."

Henry: "And then Momma came in and put the plug into the outlet."
Reporter: "And?"

Henry: "Well the fan started spinning again - just like it's doing right now."

Hot hounds breathed a cool sigh of relief today as authorities put the Spin back in the fan ahead of an oncoming heat wave.

With projected highs pricking the century mark, panic amongst pampered pooches was reaching a fever pitch until the plug was reunited with the outlet.

Golden Hour

But in keeping with the spirit (as well as the letter) of the challenge, today's shots were taken as close to sunset as I could get, before the sun dipped below the house across the street, using only the sunlight streaming in through the window.

I've heard the Golden Retriever referred to as the Boy Scout dog, and it's easy to see why when you compare the temperament in the AKC breed standard:

"Friendly, reliable, and trustworthy."

... with the Boy Scout Law:

"A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty,
brave, clean, and reverent."

Throw in the Golden Retriever's success in obedience, use as a service dog (helpful), and their perpetually cheerful attitudes, and the comparison is even stronger.

Editor's Notes

I was actually quite pleased with how this shoot turned out, so don't be too surprised to find some Also Rans sprinkled in the blog over the next few days or so.

While I felt the shots above fit the challenges best, particularly the top shot, the shot below is quite possibly the most true-to-life capture of Zachary's personality I've ever taken.

When I close my eyes and think of Zachary, this is what I see.

Henry Underneath the US Flag.

I couldn't find any references to Golden Retrievers in current use in the US Military, although I found references suggesting they have been used as bomb-sniffing dogs in the past.

However, they are well suited, and aptly used, as service dogs for returning Veterans.

Zachary, a victim of typecasting in my photostream, is just as big a Baby inside as Henry, and like most Goldens they both are Forever Young at heart.
