Truth in advertising: Living on the West Coast, we actually call these brown paper thingies "bags", but google assures me that there are portions of the USA that use "sack" instead.

I grew up south of New Orleans and we called them sacks. In fact, I worked in a grocery store for awhile and the bag boys were called Sackers.
