Dog Blog Post #1169

Isn't It Ironic that the fastest way for the boys to GET the Cookies, is to LEAVE them alone?

This is actually a fairly easy trick to teach a puppy, and is, at some level, behind a good portion of the shots I take.

Puppy quickly learns that if they try to eat the Cookie in your hand, you make a fist and surround it, but if they ignore the Cookie - even if just for a moment - they get the Cookie.

This simple behavior is then extended to include things on the floor, or table, and even if you aren't in the room at all.

A most useful trick!

Daily Dog Challenge "678. Isn't It Ironic"

Our Daily Challenge - September 8, 2013 - "Rust"

Today's Guest Prop is a (somewhat) rusty Dragonfly - a gift from Mom for the garden, years ago.

Miss Dragonfly usually sits on the picnic table, where I can see her from from the kitchen window.

Zachary Can Do This Too

Zachary learned this trick the "traditional" way, where the dog is supposed to back away from the Cookie. This is great if the item in question is a pill or something toxic. Not so great if you are trying to entice your model to a prop.

I didn't require the "backing up" part with Henry, as I was into Photography by the time I was teaching it, hence he much easier to pose around food.

I haven't seen any correlation between the proximity of the dog's nose to the food and the chances of them "breaking" and eating the food.

Both of them are very good models. :)

  1. Yep I know that "leave it" trick all to well. Once MOM put a treat on her office floor told me to leave it. Then someone came in and asked if h=she could do something or the other in the sanctuary. She left me (and forgot me) and when she came back like 20 minutes later there I was still looking at the treat sitting in my own drool puddle.

  4. I was going to look for something rusty to add to ours, but it was so hot, we weren't going far. I really like what you did with it! :)

  5. "Leave It" is an important command for pups to learn. Boomer and Dottie still struggle with their Labrador desires to eat anything and everything on a walk so this command is used quite a bit.

I love the photos, it's cool to see behind the scenes!

  7. Miss Dragonfly is a cutie pie. I have mom things in my garden, most notably a sheep holding an ear of corn. His name is Colonel Cornwallace. Or Fluffy Ewe. F. Ewe for short.
