Cheesy Burger down the hatch.

Yeah, today was a good shoot for the boys. :)

Dog Blog Post #1443

One of the first things I work on with a new puppy is Bite Inhibition.

This is NOT the same as "No Bite", which teaches a dog they should NEVER have teeth on skin.

Rather, Bite Inhibition is teaching them to use Soft Mouths whenever their teeth/mouths contact skin.

The theory goes that you just can't count on contact never happening and it's safer to have a dog that knows what skin feels like in their mouths and that they shouldn't clamp down on it.

That is, their mouths should be a safe place for your fingers - even if those fingers taste like Cheese Burger.

True, as Golden Retrievers they come by their soft mouths naturally, but they still need to learn the use those soft mouths on skin!

The flip side is that as Retrievers they are very, very mouthy pretty much for life, as fas as I can tell.

Daily Dog Challenge 952 "Tip of the Day"

The boys say: "Never bite the hand that feeds you!"

The Other Dog

Henry loves tug and his teeth glance off my hand several times per play session as I flip and whirl the tug toy around.

Bite Inhibition means that when he senses the wooly tug toy he can grab hard and when he touches soft skin he keeps his mouth open.

And boy can he pull. If I'm on my knees in jeans he can pull me across the hardwood floor.

Our Golden Tucker used to know "easy" when he took something from our fingers. If you forgot to tell him, he would get excited and snatch his treats.
