Dog Blog Post #2008
The
Modern Wonders on demand, battery powered light and (reasonably) unbreakable plastic allows for all kinds of fun shoots.
I would never dream of trying this if those bulbs were made of glass!
Photography Assignment
Fun shoot.
I tried several settings to get things focused, not too dark, yet allow the light bulb's glow to show through.
The settings for the shots of Zachary are: f/2.8, 1/50s, -2.0EV, ISO 100.
For Henry's shots (above) substitute 1/60s. Henry's shoot is always first, and after checking the camera LCD when I switched dogs I thought the images were a bit dark, hence the slightly slower speed for Zachary.
The lone exception is the bottom shot of Henry at: f/2.8, 1/25s, -3EV, ISO 100 - a rather slow shot for a living (breathing) creature, even one as steady as Henry is.
It was one of my first shots and I was still fiddling with the knobs, but I liked it none-the-less.
For reference, my usual settings - used for all "studio" shots that aren't specifically trying for some sort of special effect - are: f/7.1, 1/160s, 0EV, ISO 100, which equates to a smaller aperture (less light allowed in but greater depth of field so more of the dogs are in focus), shorter exposure (no movement blur), and leaving the flash at full power.
