Socks... shirts... towels... underwear... it doesn't really matter what.

While the shot above was posed, the one below is a happy-snappy iPhone shot taken just a few minutes earlier showing Henry with this exact same shirt, following me around as I was setting up the shoot.

If you have a Golden Retriever, I'm sure you understand.

This is my Nikkor 60mm Macro lens, which is what I use the vast majority of the time because the length is Just Right for the size of my "studio" (e.g. Kitchen).

Today, it shows off its Up-Close-And-Personal side under floor lamp (dim) conditions.

I reduced Exposure Value by 1.0 to push the ISO down to 1000 (from ISO 1600, below)

1/60s, f/3.2, ISO 1000

These are not cropped shots.

How close I can get is limited only by the glass itself and keeping the lens body from getting in the way of the light source.

For the shot directly above, I was a few inches away. I could have moved a bit closer but then you wouldn't have seen the whole nose.

I was trying for an Old Masters look of strong lights and shadows.

The shot above is of Henry, posed in a gentle curve that brought to my mind "The Grand Odalisque" by Jean Auguste Ingres.

Hmmm... you know, I could probably recreate that painting with one of the boys.

Well, with Henry. Zachary would look too stiff.

I would have to take a bit of artistic license here and there, but...

IMHO it's "extraordinarily good" / "wonderful" to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon curled up on the sofa with a warm snuggly dog curled up against you sound asleep.

In this case, Zachary.

He was dreaming at this moment, with quickened breathing and the occasional paw twitch.

That lump under the blanket is my leg.

Perhaps the photographer was a bit more adventurous than she should have been.

The lamp was taken first, to get the "flare" (small aperture, long exposure - f/22, 3s) then masked into Zachary's image (per EXIF) against the same background.

I think my boys are perfectly masculine-looking Golden Retrievers, even when naked, but just in case there is any doubt I tried to give a stereotypically male feel to the image by using darker/bluer tones, a top hat, and a bow tie.

Speaking of gender (of dogs, that is) I've decided most people make the following assumptions about my dogs...

1. Furry dogs - at least Golden Retrievers - are, by default, female.

2. When two dogs are being walked together, they must be of opposite genders.

3. Therefore, when two dogs are being walked together, the furrier of the two must be the female.

The fact that Henry is visibly larger - in height as well as bone - makes zero difference.

Henry is fluffy. Henry's fur is somewhat wavy. Henry is a girl.

Zachary is sleek. Zachary's fur is straight. Zachary is a boy.

(sigh)
