Don't Let Me Down

Don't worry Zachary, when the time comes the bowl will be filled!

As somebody usually, asks... no, this is not their actual food/water bowl. It's only trotted out as a prop, which is why it is so clean, scratch free, and shiny.

Even a Stainless Steel bowl this size is too light weight and the boys would push it around. Plus, the rubber around the base is hard to keep clean.

The boys use simple, heavy ceramic bowls that are easy to keep clean and always stay put.

Their bowls sit on pet placements - one for each dog, side by side - which have a shallow lip to keep the water they invariably slosh over the edge from spilling out across the floor.

Two Golden Dogs balancing Two Golden Cookies on their nose. (Noses?)

Photography Assignment

Daily Dog Challenge 2309. "Equal"

118 Pictures in 2018 - #13. "Equal"

I had hoped to make the stacks three high, but balancing Cookies is really hard for Zachary (left).

I've stacked them six high on Henry's nose before - the limit of my own stacking ability, in part due to the lack of symmetry in the Cookies themselves.

Alas, Holding Still (Doing Nothing) is most definitely NOT one of Mr. Zachary's Special Powers, so two Cookies it is.

It's not for lack of trying - you can see in the picture how hard he's concentrating. But try as he might, those Cookie just seem to slip off his muzzle.

Meanwhile, Henry's just sitting there. And will keep sitting there, looking just like that, for pretty much as long as I need to get a shot.

Tip: Stacking Cookie on a single dog is pretty easy. I usually pre-stack on the floor, then pick up the whole stack and set it on the muzzle. Ta-da!

Stacking on two dogs is harder, because they either want to look at the Cookies on each other's muzzles, or they watch me working on the other dog and their muzzles dip.

My solution is to put my left forearm under their muzzles, like a shelf, to keep them even while I'm stacking with my right hand and then step away when I'm done.

Dog Days
Henry - King of the Pillow

Dog Blog Post #2455

The pillow rests on the sofa.

The paw rests on the pillow.

The chin rests on the paw.

What's the secret to Happily Ever After?

Eat. Play. Nap.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

It seems to be working for Henry.

Catching Cookies

Incoming! 8/52
Henry Catching Cookies

Dog Blog Post #2454

The Cookie is on its way and Closing fast!

I'd tell you if Henry caught it, but he made me sign a non-disclosure agreement before we started the shoot.

Let's just say the pup will never make the Olympics in Cookie Catching.

I was going to use this for 118 Picture in 2018 - #12. "Precision" but my conscience wouldn't let me.

Perhaps Zachary will show us how it's done later this year.

Truth in Advertising: There may once have been a Cookie visible in this image.

This is the third (and probably final) of the "Olympics" collars.

I need to find an appropriate clasp/button for it, although it would obviously be just for show.

This is unlined fleece, hand sewing, turned over an 1" on top and along the front edges. It's solid for about 4" or so, with 1/2" strips cut into the remaining fabric for fringe.

As I was cutting the rest of the strips tonight, I kept thinking about those long strips you see at car washes.

Henry was fine with it until a Cookie fell on the floor, at which time it became a bit of a hinderance.

I suppose I could shorten the fringe, but it's only a problem if he misses the Cookie (eh hem) and we're unlikely to ever repeat this exact shoot again, so I probably won't.

Zachary's shoot was pretty much the same, but a lot more slobbery. :)

Dog Blog Post #2452

All the time I've spent watching the Olympics has at least one upside - a pair of new collars for the boys with a third started tonight.

This one was inspired by Ice Skating costumes with an eye toward the patriotic holidays.

I admit to being rather pleased I could trot it out much sooner.

The blue sequin fabric was a remnant. The red purchased off the bolt to match using a 40% off coupon. I picked up the white ribbon on deep discount after the Christmas Holidays.

The ribbon is actually quite elegant up close, and I was a bit surprised it wasn't moved over to the "Princess" isle as there is nothing specifically Christmas about it.

The basic frame for the collar is a 4" wide strip of heavy white felt, cut into two pieces, one for the red and one for the blue. The sequin fabric - rather slinky stuff - is simply turned over the felt around the edges and stitched by hand.

Tip of the day: avoid skewering sequins - they dull your needle and leave it sticky

The completed red and blue were stitched together, edge on, at the obvious places and then the ribbon sewn around the top.

The whole thing took me about four hours or so of very distracted sewing.

I love using felt as a base for prop-collars as it's heavy enough to hold down the boys' ruffs yet soft, pliable, and easy to sew. It also tends to "grab" the fur and stay put.

This isn't thin by-the-sheet felt, but the nicer kind you buy off the bolt. At ~$7 a yard and 60" wide, it's a really good deal. That's 18 collars at $0.40 per collar.
